Senior Health Fair/Flu Shot Clinic

We want to remind seniors to attend our Senior Health Fair/Flu Shot Clinic on Friday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Community College of Allegheny County North Campus. There is a limited supply of flu shots. Please call our office at 412-369-2230 to make an appointment.

The Health Fair is a great opportunity for senior citizens and their families to access valuable information about programs for seniors, safety tips, health care, nutrition and various other state programs available to them.

During the event, seniors and their families can also receive assistance applying for many of the state-operated programs, such as PACE and PACENET prescription drug programs and Property Tax/Rent Rebates.

We welcome your questions about any state issues that are impacting you and our community and look forward to meeting you. The Community College of Allegheny County North Campus is located at 8701 Perry Highway in Pittsburgh.

Northland Public Library Receives GEDF Grant

My office secured a $140,000 Gaming Economic Development Fund (GEDF) grant for Northland Public Library to replace its 20-year-old HVAC system, roof and a leaking skylight.

The Northland Library is so important to the fabric of our community. It allows access to literature and information, provides a meeting place for families to learn together and hosts community events. The improvements to the Northland Library will help insure the comfort and safety of everyone who uses the library.

The Northland Library is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary and recently achieved the status of PA Forward Bronze Star Library. It is the second largest library in Allegheny County, second only to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, serving over 80,000 residents in the North Hills.

The GEDF program was established by Act 71 of 2004. The grant program was scheduled to end in 2019. However, language I championed was added to Act 42 of 2017 to extend these vitally important community improvement programs for an additional 10 years starting in Fiscal Year 2019-20. The GEDF program is funded through gaming revenues and does not use General Fund taxpayer dollars.

Addiction and Opioid Presentation

The Pine-Richland School District will be hosting an Addiction and Opioid Presentation with Dr. C. Thomas Brophy on Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Pine-Richland High School auditorium.

Dr. Brophy will be providing insights into addiction and the opioid epidemic from his real-life experiences and perspective as a doctor and a parent.

The House has made protecting our children from opioid addiction a priority. Over the last several years, we have enacted a comprehensive set of new laws aimed at addressing the opioid crisis through prevention, education and treatment. For school children, Act 55 of 2017 requires that schools incorporate opioid abuse prevention, with an emphasis on the prescription drug epidemic and addiction to heroin, into their alcohol, chemical and tobacco abuse curricula.

You can learn more about legislative efforts to combat the opioid epidemic here.

PA Treasury Holding Military Decorations

The Pennsylvania Treasury announced the launch of a new state website dedicated to reuniting military decorations that have been reported as unclaimed property with their rightful owners.

The new search function allows users to search their names, or the name of a loved one, to see if Treasury is holding a military decoration as unclaimed property. In addition, users can look through a photo gallery featuring some of the decorations that are in the unclaimed property vault, as well as medals that have been returned to their rightful owners. Military decorations are often reported to Treasury as contents held in a safe deposit box that has gone unclaimed or abandoned.

Since 2017, Treasury has returned 58 service decorations, some of which have been in Treasury’s custody for decades, including Purple Hearts, to their rightful owners. Treasury continues to search for the owners of over 500 unclaimed military awards.
