Turzai Announces GEDF Grant for Northland Public Library
9/21/2018
PITTSBURGH– Speaker of the Pennsylvania House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) announced a Gaming Economic Development Fund (GEDF) grant to improve the Northland Public Library.

“The Northland Library is so important to the fabric of our community,” Turzai said. “The Northland Library allows access to literature and information, provides a meeting place for families to learn together and hosts community events. The improvements to the Northland Library will help insure the comfort and safety of everyone who uses the library.”

Turzai secured the $140,000 GEDF grant to replace the Northland Library’s 20-year-old HVAC system, upgrade and replace the roof and replace a leaking skylight.

The Northland Library is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary and recently achieved the status of PA Forward Bronze Star Library. It is the second largest library in Allegheny County, second only to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, serving over 80,000 residents in the North Hills.

The Northland Library is located at 300 Cumberland Road in the Town of McCandless.

The GEDF program was established by Act 71 of 2004. The grant program was scheduled to end in 2019. However, language championed by Turzai was added to Act 42 of 2017 to extend these vitally important community improvement programs for an additional 10 years starting in Fiscal Year 2019-20. The GEDF program is funded through gaming revenues and does not use General Fund taxpayer dollars.
