Speaker Turzai Urges Support for Worker Safety Legislation
5/24/2018
HARRISBURG – Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) issued the following statement regarding highway work zone safety legislation:

“On Monday, May 21, more than 2,000 employees across the Pennsylvania Turnpike took part in a Work Zone Safety Remembrance event. Their participation honored the 41 Pennsylvania Turnpike employees who have died while performing their duties,” Turzai said. “Our chamber now has legislation pending before us to help protect our workers’ lives by encouraging safer speeds in active work zones.”

Turzai noted that in 2016, there were 2,075 crashes in work zones, including 16 fatalities, across the Commonwealth. The number of fatalities increased to 19 in 2017. Senate Bill 172, which passed the Senate in July of 2017, would authorize PennDOT to establish a pilot program to place speed cameras in active work zones on limited access highways. The cameras would be permitted to operate when employees are actively working in the zone.

The purpose of Senate Bill 172 and similar legislation is to deter motorists from exceeding the posted speed limits in work zones and is modeled after legislation enacted in the state of Maryland. Turzai noted that with ongoing investments in highway improvements statewide, it is crucial to help ensure the safety of Pennsylvania’s workers and drivers.
