Turzai Honored as ‘Guardian of Small Business’
HARRISBURG – Rep. Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) has been named a “Guardian of Small Business” by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). Turzai received the award for his 100 percent voting record on behalf of Pennsylvania’s small-business owners.

“A strong small business climate is indicative of a strong economy and a strong economy means good private-sector jobs and careers,” Turzai said. “One of our top agenda items is making Pennsylvania business friendly to attract and maintain and grow employers; we have brought about real changes and we are appreciative it’s been noticed.”

Guardian of Small Business Awards are given to legislators who voted favorably on key small-business issues during the current session.

Turzai has continued to promote and advance a pro-jobs agenda in the House. Since becoming majority leader in Janu¬ary 2011, the Commonwealth’s unemployment rate has plummeted from 8.2 percent to 5.7 percent in July 2014. Not only is Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate well below the national average, it is equal to or lower than all of our neighboring states. Over 123,000 new jobs have been created since 2011.

The major piece of entrepreneurial-friendly legislation in the current session of the General Assembly is House Bill 790, the privatization of retail and wholesale sales of wine and spirits in Pennsylvania. The bill is awaiting Senate action.

A key piece of legislation supported by Turzai was the Inheritance Tax Elimination Act (Act 52 of 2013) exempting assets of family-owned Pennsylvania businesses being transferred between family members from the inheritance tax.

For the fourth consecutive year under Turzai’s leadership, the House passed a budget that did not raise taxes, respected the standards of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR) and landed on the governor’s desk on time.

Other measures to improve the jobs climate in the state include tax reforms, lawsuit abuse reform, first-ever unemployment compensation reform, infrastructure improvements and regulatory reforms.

NFIB is the leading small business association representing small and independent businesses. A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded in 1943, NFIB represents the consensus views of its members in Washington, D.C., and all 50 state capitals. NFIB’s mission is to promote and protect the right of its members to own, operate and grow their businesses.
