PA House Leaders Admonish Academic Bigotry
HARRISBURG – Bigotry is wrong and cannot be tolerated is the message Pennsylvania House Leaders are sending today with the introduction of a resolution condemning the Academic Studies Association (ASA) boycott against the State of Israel, House Majority Leader, Rep. Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny County) announced today.

The resolution, sponsored by Speaker of the House Sam Smith (R-Armstrong, Indiana and Jefferson counties), Turzai, Democratic Leader Frank Dermody (D-Allegheny County) and Democratic Caucus Chairman Dan Frankel (D-Allegheny County), condemns the ASA’s actions as anti-Semitic and an intolerable form of bigotry. It further urges universities to acknowledge the hostile academic learning environment caused by the ASA action and calls for non-participation in the boycott by universities in Pennsylvania.

“Academic institutions were created to protect free learning, free speech and a free exchange of ideas,” Turzai said. “With this resolution, we hope to send a strong message: Academic bigotry and hatred will not be tolerated in Pennsylvania.”

“We support the academic freedom of all institutions of higher education,” Smith said. “While some Pennsylvania universities have already publically denounced the anti-Semitism and bigotry of the ASA boycott, we hope all the universities and colleges in Pennsylvania follow suit.”

“Intolerance and bigotry should have no place in our society, particularly in academic institutions of higher learning,” Dermody said. “Members of the House of Representatives feel strongly about this, and the resolution demonstrates our shared belief that these destructive forces do not belong in Pennsylvania universities and colleges.”

“I am pleased to see this resolution moving forward in the House,” Frankel said. “We have the opportunity to send a clear, bi-partisan message that the ASA boycott does not reflect the views of most Pennsylvanians.”

The resolution was introduced today as House Resolution 627.
