Statement From House Majority Leader Turzai Regarding the Supreme Court’s Affirmation of Legislative Maps

HARRISBURG – The following is a statement from House Majority Leader Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny County) in response to the unanimous decision of the state Supreme Court approving the new legislative district maps for the 2014 elections:

“We applaud the Supreme Court’s 6-0 decision affirming the Legislative Reapportionment Commission met its constitutional and statutory obligations. Pennsylvania will have new legislative districts in the 2014 elections.
“Justice Saylor, in penning his concurrent opinion, acknowledges that ‘the Court has only a few definable standards in reviewing a reapportionment plan…’ and concludes by acknowledging that redistricting ‘is legislative and political.’
“It took much work, but I believe the 2012 Final Plan is a good map which will ensure every Pennsylvanian has representation in the state House. Of the state’s 2,567 municipalities, only 68 or 2.37 percent have been split in this plan.”
