Corbett Proposal is Beginning of Budget Process, Says Turzai
HARRISBURG – House Majority Leader Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) issued the following statement regarding Gov. Tom Corbett’s 2013-14 budget proposal.  Corbett unveiled his proposed $28.44 billion spending plan Tuesday before a joint session of the General Assembly.

“Upon initial review, there were many positives to the governor’s proposal.  The plan increases spending by 2.4 percent, a figure below the rate suggested by the Taxpayer Bill of Rights that limits growth to inflation and population measures. The budget plan increases the investment in public education to nearly $5.5 billion. This is the highest state allocation in Pennsylvania for our school districts.  Young people are one of our most valuable assets and this budget proposal ensures their continued academic growth and success.

“The governor laid out his plan to address the looming pension crisis, and his proposals for reform are a good starting point; we need to take a reasonable approach to the problem that limits the burden on taxpayers without jeopardizing the Commonwealth’s obligations.

“We are encouraged by the governor’s proposal to privatize the sale of wine and spirits and focus in on customer convenience and choice.  It is an expectation that the vast majority of the public has put in front of the legislature.  We need to continue our conversations and craft a plan that best serves the people of Pennsylvania.

“My goal is for the House of Representatives to pass an on-time budget that funds the core functions of government. The governor’s proposal represents a fiscally responsible budget that lives within our means and this proposal is another step in getting Pennsylvania fiscally in order.”
