Turzai Applauds Efforts to Bring Mass Transit Competition to Allegheny County

Majority Leader Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) issued the following statement regarding Lenzner Coach Lines’ proposal to offer transit services from the Franklin Park and Marshall areas to downtown Pittsburgh.  Under current state law, the Port Authority of Allegheny County has the exclusive rights over transit within the county.  Outside transit companies must apply to the Port Authority for permission to offer routes within the county.

“This is the first step in fixing Allegheny County’s transit problems, and outside services can only benefit people traveling in the county -- without imposing additional costs to taxpayers. The Port Authority already cut service to these areas, so there really can’t be any complaints about competition. Lenzner is offering service where none currently exists.

“However, while this is a step in the right direction, I believe it is necessary to completely eliminate the state-mandated monopoly on transit services and allow for private companies or regional transit systems to provide transit services within the county.  My colleague, Rep. Mark Mustio, and I plan to re-introduce legislation that will do just that.  Competition will create more transportation efficiency and will offer choices and potentially lower prices to transit riders.”
