– Speaker of the Pennsylvania House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) secured a $250,000 Gaming Economic Development Fund (GEDF) grant for the North Allegheny School District’s plan to improve its athletic fields at the North Allegheny Intermediate (NAI) School complex.
The North Allegheny Intermediate complex serves approximately 1,300 students in ninth and 10th grades for the North Allegheny School District. There are baseball, softball, soccer and football fields located behind the Intermediate High School that many of its students use for various sports activities. Many other folks in the community also use the fields as well the track. The school district and the community have long sought artificial turf fields that can be used even when damp or wet. The community identified the NAI complex as a suitable location. Speaker Turzai wanted to help with this effort, ensuring that a GEDF grant was awarded to the North Allegheny School District for this purpose.
In addition to replacing grass surfaces with artificial turf, the school district would also like to install stadium lights, place a security fence around the complex, and build dugouts at the baseball and softball fields. The North Allegheny Intermediate High School is located in the Town of McCandless.
“State-of-the-art all-weather fields enhance the quality of life for folks of all ages in the community. Such new fields would provide more opportunities for physical activity, which are incredibly important for our youth. It was my honor to help the North Allegheny School District’s efforts by securing this $250,000 grant,” Turzai said.
The GEDF program was established by Act 71 of 2004. The grant program was scheduled to end in 2019. However, language championed by Speaker Turzai was added to Act 42 of 2017 to extend these important community improvement programs for an additional 10 years, starting in Fiscal Year 2019-20. The GEDF program is funded through gaming revenues and does not use General Fund taxpayer dollars.
