HARRISBURG – Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) and Pine Township Manager Scott Anderson today announced plans to construct an asphalt path connecting Pine Community Park and residential communities to help increase the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists.

“We were pleased to have worked with Pine Township officials to secure funding for this important community safety project through the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program (GTRP),” Turzai said. “This path will give pedestrians and bicyclists a safe and enjoyable path between the residential communities and Pine Community Park.”

The 1,500-foot bike and pedestrian path would run along Pearce Mill Road and include a 10-foot by 100-foot tunnel under Pearce Mill Road. The path would also include ADA-compliant crossings and restore landscaping disturbed by the construction of the path.

“We plan to put this project out to bid in the very near future,” said Pine Township Manager Scott Anderson. “We are appreciative of the partnership with Speaker Turzai’s office and the ability to access state grant money to complete this project.”

The addition of this bike and pedestrian path is part of a larger project to connect the Pine-Richland High School campus to the Pine Community Park.

The project is made possible by a $466,669 grant from the GTRP. The GTRP was created by Act 13 of 2012, which created the Marcellus Legacy Fund to direct money from natural gas impact fees to the Commonwealth Financing Authority for greenways, recreational trails, open space, parks and beautification projects.
