HARRISBURG – Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) touted the improved safety along a 2.33 mile stretch of Route 19 in the Town of McCandless and the Township of Pine.
“The Wexford Flats Improvement Project
was completed in the Spring of 2013, and it has made a markedly positive change in the community,” Turzai said. “Safety, congestion mitigation and management and improvement of the quality of life in the community were the benchmarks of the project. A review of the accident data available through PennDOT shows that we have met those benchmarks.”
According to an analysis of public PennDOT statistics
, there has been a 38 percent decrease in accidents and a 33 percent decrease in injuries along that section of Rt. 19. The crash and injury information was drawn from PennDOT’s Pennsylvania Crash Information Tool comparing accident data from the five years prior to the project and the five years following completion. A graph comparing the two time frames and the crash history reports are also attached.
“Countless individuals – from PennDOT, hired private contractors, local municipal and school officials, business and land owners, community organizations and citizens who make use of the highway – came together to make sure the project was a success. We were proud to help spearhead this effort and move this project forward.”
Starting at its southern limits in the Town of McCandless, the 2.33-mile project commenced north of Longvue Avenue in the Town of McCandless (near the lngomar Fire substation) and continued into the Township of Pine, where it finished north of the North Chapel/Manor Road intersection (near Aldi's). The existing roadway was widened from 42 feet to 63 feet, consisting of four 11-foot lanes separated by a 14-foot center turning lane with a 2- to 6-foot curb gutter along both sides of the roadway. Adjacent to the curb is a 5-foot sidewalk on either side of Route 19 Perry Highway. The intersections were widened to 63 feet to accommodate left-turn standby lanes using state-of-the-art signalization.
