You’re Invited to My Senior Health Fair/Flu Shot Clinic

My annual Senior Citizens Expo will take place at the Community College of Allegheny County North Campus on Friday, Oct. 4, from 9 a.m. to noon.

My staff and I are looking forward to spending time with our neighbors and friends who come out to visit us.

Dozens of local vendors will discuss programs and services to our seniors. Free flu shots will be available, but you must call 412-369-2230 to schedule an appointment. There is a limited supply of flu shots.

Remember, getting the flu vaccine protects you and prevents you from spreading the flu to your spouse, children or grandchildren.

The Community College of Allegheny County is located at 8701 Perry Highway in Pittsburgh.

Capitalizing on Technology for Education

Recognizing the impact missing school can have on a student’s education, the General Assembly recently adopted two new laws to make better use of technology to limit, or even eliminate, these impacts.

Act 18 of 2019 creates the Keystone Telepresence Education Grant Program to provide funding to intermediate units for the purchase of equipment and related services to support homebound students. Telepresence technology may include a robotic device that resembles an iPad mounted on a mobile Segway unit that allows real-time communication between students who are homebound and their classrooms.

Act 64 of 2019 allows school districts, intermediate units, area vocational-technical schools and charter schools to establish a “flexible instructional day” program to use when school is closed due to weather, damage to the school building, disease epidemic or other temporary circumstances.

Act 64 takes effect this Saturday, Aug. 31, while Act 18 will take effect Sept. 26.

Road Construction in Our Area

Plans are being discussed to upgrade the Wexford Interchange. The project is approximately 1.5 miles long.

Scope of the work includes, but is not limited to, completing interchange redesign and improvements to Brandt School Road intersection. Other work includes, updating ADA features, traffic signal upgrades, signing/pavement marking updates, minor drainage work, guiderail updates as needed and other construction as necessary.

Also, a meeting was held last week to identify issues within the project limits and propose modification to the features. I will have more on this meeting and project when it becomes available.

Register for Senior’s ConnectCard at My District Office

Our constituents can register for the Port Authority Senior Citizen ConnectCard at our main district office, located at 125 Hillvue Lane, First Floor, in McCandless. You can also call us at 412-369-2230.

The Senior Citizen ConnectCard permits adults age 65 or older to ride for free on Port Authority vehicles, including buses, light rail and inclines, during all hours of operation. The ConnectCard can be used with other transportation authorities across the Commonwealth by flashing the card to the operator.

It is important to bring valid proof-of-age documentation with you to our office. We will accept a photo driver’s license, PA ID card, passport, PACE ID card, armed forces discharge/separation papers or a birth certificate.

Seniors are reminded that their blue or yellow transit flash passes will continue to be accepted, but if you currently show the driver a Medicare card to ride public transit in Allegheny County or you will soon be turning 65, you will need to get a Senior ConnectCard before Jan. 1, 2020.
